As far as widening the "funnel", I would put the development rate option as the top priority.

I play a hockey sim , & the biggest thing that seems to lead to new players dropping out is how long it takes to build up the team, to being competitive. (~1 yr, real time)
One of the most enjoyable things is watching a top prospect finally take the field , and start contributing to team improvement. Right now , that's taking a long time, & some might get impatient, and walk away.

No confirmation of a date yet, but this is coming very soon. Still testing out the changes that they were referring to in the video.
