    Manager rankings

What do you think should go into a good manager ranking system?

We are definitely going to be working on manager rankings. I know Smittias worked on this before, and we’ll build off his work. Billions of different directions to go, and ideally we’d have multiple metrics to cover some of the ‘you say tomato, I also say tomato’ type debates.

I suspect there will be a lot of opinions on this, some of them already started HERE.

(Rent did some work on this in The Classic League, will try and find tomorrow.)

    Manager rankings

As I’m drinking my coffee this morning, I got thinking about what makes a good owner. obvious things like wins, playoffs, trading etc come to mind. But another piece is the forum presence. And it’s already a metric that tracked by Rep score and also number of posts. Perhaps the Owner rating could have a component for Forum Presence? Or maybe that’s a separate Score to be included on the Owner Profile?

This could serve to give incentive to being active on the forum. Also could help sort when recruiting for an open team.

    Just thinking out loud here.

    Ty

    Re: Manager rankings

I would strongly oppose considering forum presence in owner rankings, and I say that as a pretty active owner.

It should be primarily based upon winning percentage, but there would ideally be some considerations of the context of the league and the quality of other owners in those leagues when evaluating winning percentage. A .550 winning percentage in a really good league, is perhaps more impressive than a .600 winning percentage in some league with worse owners. How hard that is to do I don’t really know. You’d also want to consider leagues like Re-Draft as different because there are only 8 human owners. Winning 100 games there means you actually did really poorly, for example.

    I'm with you on that.
Rankings should be all about ability playing the game, not how much you talk.

Smittias did it where the ranking was firstly for % and WS wins in Top Tier leagues, and then also complete records for all leagues.
This worked well and the new system should be done basically the same way I think.

    Re: Manager rankings

Why not have a forum presence rating seperate from in game rating? Because if one owner is constantly posting in a league dont tell me it doesnt get you more interested. It still matters, just not as much as actually playing the game.

Yea i think the idea of a separate Community rating makes sense. It should be distinct from the competitive rating. My thinking was to a large degree, it’s already tracked. Bringing it into the game might be a good addition.

    Re: Manager rankings

Any ranking which motivates people to play the game for any other reason than fun should be avoided.

Hate to see owners drop teams because the league brings down their ranking, or only join leagues that up their rankings.

Do we see leagues prevent owners who are new or not ranked high enough because it brings down their rankings.

Lots of good research going on about how measuring something ( workers . Students etc) changes the way that something behaves.

Just make sure what you are measuring is what you want from the game because it will have an effect on behavior.

On the other hand it can motivate people to try to get their ranking up. I play the game to do as well as I can AND I also want to have fun. It’s all good if other people just play for fun, but then those people could just ignore the rankings I think.

Oh yeah for sure I think a separate ranking for forum presence sounds great! All I’m saying is that I very much want it to be separate.

Yes this. I think the game is about activity. And having solid active owners. Winning / World Series titles isn’t always success on a game environment. I know lots of managers enjoy beating me in the playoffs. And that’s ok. The challenge is created / emotion. Which equals a great game.
