I will admit that I’ve been nervous for a while now. Would love to be wrong.

How serious are you taking it? Are you doing anything about it yet?

it's a 'special' flu.... how do you normally handle flu season and those sick around you?

"In more serious cases of COVID-19, patients experience pneumonia, which means their lungs begin to fill with pockets of pus or fluid. This leads to intense shortness of breath and painful coughing."

"'We simply do not understand why': Coronavirus is sparing children, puzzling experts"

like I said, it's a special flu so some extra precautions I would take or will be taking I suppose

This might come as a surprise, but—for America’s well-being—this virus (in its present form) does not scare me all that much.

There are several reasons for this, which I will not belabor here.

On the other hand, for me personally, I am somewhat concerned. My lungs are compromised (asthma, prior history of pneumonia and chronic bronchitis), so I am one of those at higher risk. Still, I think the numbers will not be too different from flu, and certainly will not rival SARS or MRSA, in terms of lethality.

I kind of agree with Joke on this.

I think that the early precautions were handled well, and I think that what we're seeing is a media induced panic. Has it even hit triple digit infections here yet?

Yeah, it's only been about a month since the first case in the US. China had thousands of cases after a month. It's obviously a big deal, especially if it's going to become another seasonal thing like the flu. But it's not the black plague. I'm not worried personally, but I do hope my grandma doesn't get it.

Re: The Real Coronavirus Thread 2020

You might be right. I will say that I don’t feel very influenced by the mainstream media. I don’t watch any TV, and the only traditional news source that I’ve been reading for the last few years is BBC, which seems to be the best combination of least bias while maintaining enough size to actually investigate and provide coverage.

Anyway, I’m trying to follow the numbers. I’ve been following this one infectious disease and computational biology guy who is taking the sequenced genomes of the various virus samples and inferring transmission lineages and rates. Here’s a decent summary of where they were with it yesterday or late Monday night if I recall correctly:

    https://bedford.io/blog/ncov-cryptic-transmission/

Here’s his about-us page if you want his background: https://bedford.io/team/trevor-bedford/

Here’s an article that puts some editorial on top of his research: https://www.statnews.com/2020/03/03/...analysis-says/

So based on his model, he would suggest that:

    1. Coronavirus has been in Washington state for at least 6 weeks and has been transmitted in the community.
    2. There have been at least two different lineages introduced (separately) to the area.
    3. There are probably already 500-600 infected as of I believe either Sunday night or Monday. 90% confidence interval suggested something like between 80 and 1,500 (and then a few days have passed, so presumably higher).
    4. The only way China was able to curb the exponential growth was via draconian measures that we’re unlikely to take in the US (at least until it’s too late).

So I’m currently worried about widespread infection in the US, some large number of hospitalized and deceased (even if those rates prove to be lower than initial estimates would suggest), and pretty massive societal and economic shutdown (from which we would fully recover, but it would be ugly for a while).

Hope I’m wrong, but that’s my fear.
