chasing a Cy Young with no wins

With the July Award race come out: I have a middle reliever who ranks #6.

He is 0-2 on the season...……..

…..but has an 0.95 ERA, and 0.91 WHIP in 50-60 innings. Last year he was an All-Star in such a role (I think his ERA was around 1.20 but I'd have to recheck)

Interestingly, I picked him up before the start of last year, off the FA market (he is in his 20s)

I've found that middle relievers and closers are always overvalued in the Cy Young race in July. Just wait until September when starters start reaching that 15+ win total and amass a good number or K's, he probably won't even be on the list

Sometimes good, sometimes bad. Had a guy recently who started as a CL, but after about 10 SVs worth, I had to move him to the rotation (which I had hoped to be his eventual role, anyway). He was in the Relief Pitcher race (even when he had more starts than relief appearances), but couldn't crack the CYA race (despite getting to 15 wins, and around a 2.50 ERA, and better in both then a couple of tailenders in that race.

Not good with links, typing out the address is the only way I can do it successfully.

Anyway, his ERA was a little higher last year than I remember, right now I am trying to give him rest by putting him at LR for a few games here and there. I think his previous team gave up on him after one season for his low-CO rating (apart from having a dismal rookie season, and just the likelihood the owner needed to drop salary).

Why are you not putting him in the rotation? He is wasting away in your pen.

What Matt said. Looks like a good starter. Plenty endurance

Well, I do have 4 pretty good starters. 2 of which have won CYAs in the past. His low-CO has made me somewhat nervous to put in the rotation.

But, thinking about you may have a point. His salary did jump this spring. Higher than I tend to like spending on relievers. And this team was a last ditch effort to make a playoff run before rebuilding, and has been a .500 team* that has lost that steam in the last month. So, maybe I should give him a September tryout as the 5th man.

*my lineup apart from an MVP candidate DH, a rookie CF who is playing above his mediocre potential. And a 3 headed catching platoon that has been somehow successful. The rest of the lineup are having below average seasons. (and given my run differential last I checked, I suspect I have been on the wrong side of a lot of one-run games, though I haven't checked that out)

Anyhow, I am giving him "rest" till after the draft. After which I may put him in as the 5th SP per suggestion. Thanks.
