Yeah, he said it would work exactly the same way as it currently does. It would just happen immediately rather than having to wait for the flip.

    I like the idea.

i have a bit of concern about abuse.
    - will FA be able to be signed, and immediately position-change mid-season, then be dropped?
    - would managers be able to change the position of a player they are going to release to reduce his defensive value for his next team?

Revert his position back to most commonly played when dropped?
    Happy, but a little lost

    Re: Position change poll

I like the proposal of immediate change, but I also have an addition that I never thought to ask about before.

Surprisingly in all my years playing I've never asked, but is it true that if you have a 2B switch to CF as DTCT suggests, he drops 10%, then if he goes back to 2B, he'll actually drop another 8%? I've always shied away from position switches like that because that's how I interpret the playing out of position. If that's the case, then I'd like to see it changed so if I have a player go back to his original position, his ratings go back to, or at least close to what they were originally.

Another thought based on concerns others have shared about switching and then dropping a player, etc., but could you have a spot that shows that a player was switched from a prior position?

I think that could be done by recording the player's "natural" position in a field somewhere. Position changes might impact the player's new position based on his original stat and natural position. When a player is dropped, then his position reverts to the natural position.

However, consider this: Isn't this the same thing as just having players always show up as having their original / natural position (never changing to another position regardless of time spent in a position, or through the choice of a player)? If so, I think that just taking away the ability to change positions in general will do this just as well, and much more easily.

Is there any real benefit to permanent changes of positions to begin with?

    Re: Position change poll

I think the current system has merit, of making it different learning in the minors than the majors, and provides an extra level of management in terms of developing young players, and also how you handle the major league roster.

So I'd prefer to keep the current system, with two things that could make it better.
    1. As suggested, if a player plays 80 games there's a choice of whether they switch positions or not - saves having to micro-manage when you're having to play guys out of position in an emergency

    2. The penalty for playing out of position reduces once the new position is learned. The whole reason for this discussion is that at present, it makes no difference whether a player has learned a new position or not - their stats playing that position will be the same. I'd propose halving the penalties for playing a position once it becomes the player's 'normal' spot. Example: 100 RA/100 GL CF starts learning to play SS. For that season of learning on the job, they get the 18% penalty, so their effective RA/GL are 82. They play over 80 games at SS and 'learn' the position, so at the flip they become a SS, and their RA/GL now go to 91.

There's still a penalty for moving, and if they move again somewhere the penalties will keep compounding, but there is a material difference between asking someone to play a position for a day or two and asking someone to go learn that position for half a season, and making it their primary spot

Is the bonus for low minor moves going away with this change?

The younger players would still be impacted less.
