Important Announcement: Draft quality is getting deeper

CSFBL is a fun game. And one of the most enjoyable aspects of CSFBL *should* be the annual Amateur Draft. The excitement around finding a future building block. The hopeful anticipation of discovering a useful player in later rounds. The decision making around whether to trade your picks to win now, acquire more picks as you build for the future, or stand pat. The forum discussions around draft choices evaluation and analysis. These are all things that *should* be contributing to making CSFBL the best free sim baseball game around.

You'll notice I twice wrote *should*. The current reality is that CSFBL's amateur drafts have more often than not been a source of disappointment and frustration rather than excitement and anticipation. Player talent is too shallow. This results in more autopicks as players don't see the value of combing through 60 players to find the least useless. Late first round draft picks are hard to trade and risky to acquire. And 2nd and 3rd round picks are barely even considered throw-in worthy. Manual draft reviews have become a thing of the past because they are frankly too depressing. Strong drafts have pages and pages of forum activity. Terrible drafts have complaints and crickets.

To say it simply...drafts with talented players make the game more fun. Drafts with very limited talent suck the enthusiasm out of the game. So we're going to address it.

Now before anyone starts sharpening their pitchfork...please read this part. We are not creating more superstars. We are not looking to make every team an all-star team. we are not looking to increase the quality of the first 5 - 10 picks in the draft. What we're looking to do is to increase the number of interesting players in the draft. To make drafts deeper. To make 2nd round picks potentially worth something. To ensure late first round picks have legitimate trade value. To make the draft interesting and exciting again. We've run hundreds of mock draft lists using the new formula. We've tweaked and adjusted and like what we see. And we're confident you will too.

We tried to do this a year ago and there was a vocal minority opposed to the change and we backed down. The argument that held the most water was that the salary algorithm needed fixing first before we improved player quality, or else the improvement to player quality would cause salaries to skyrocket and limit the quantity of salary scrubs. There was some validity to that point so we held off. But now, the salary algorithm HAS been redone. There are plenty of lowsals. Draft picks and prospects on the whole earn much less than they used to. And this change to the amateur draft player pool is long overdue.

One more point worthy of bold font...This is a Baby Step. We are not making a huge dramatic change here. Drafts, on the whole, will look better. There will be more "red numbers"...but not necessarily more 90s. There will still be strong drafts and weak drafts...only hopefully, the weak drafts will happen less frequently than they currently do...and maybe aren't quite as weak as the worst we are currently seeing. We hope the change will be noticeable, but it will not be dramatic.

We are looking to make this change on our closely after May 1st. So consider this your 2 weeks notice. Be conscious of this when considering trades involving future picks. Again...not a dramatic change. 1:18 isn't going to suddenly be cranking out hall of famers. But you want to be aware that this is coming down the pike before you agree to any deal. Commissioners...please help to spread the word. This news could cause the sharks to circle the fish...lets help make sure all owners at all levels are aware of this upcoming site-wide improvement so that it's not a feeding frenzy for the sharks.

We've set us a discussion thread here >> Improvements to Draft Depth - Discussion Thread. Please post questions and comments and we will post more updates as they become available.

Re: Important Announcement: Draft quality is getting deeper

The improvement to draft depth is now live. Interestingly, the closest league to have a draft drop is on 4/28, so still a day away. Years of Glory will be first.
