    Re: 2103 Season Discussion

I thought 10 years is a good timeframe to look at to see if a draft has actually panned out, so I rolled back the years to the 2093 draft to see whether we did OK. I have to say that I am pretty pleased with that draft, as I ended up with 3 players who are still starters on the team a decade later. My choice for the 3rd overall pick was either SP Douglas Romero or 2B Charles Macon. We got Romero, who helped us win the title in his rookie season, and has been a great 1-2 starter thus far. Macon went a few spots later at #7, and has been a fine selection for the Rochester Robins, providing AS hitting with GG defense at 2B.

In the 2nd round, we also got our number 1 choice in SS Tracey Harris. Our #2 and 3 options were selected immediately ahead of us, but we think Harris filled a need in SS as he was an immediate upgrade. He also got a ring in his rookie season. Although he has not received any postseason award, he has been key to the defense. With the trade for Wiggins last season, he is moving to 2B to take over from the aging George James.

In the 3rd round, we selected another defensive stalwart with Luther Mansour. The 1-time AS has run down many a potential home run, while also providing a little pop offensively. Now 30, he is the only one who has yet to get a ring. Some say the title window has lapsed, but he will be back for the next few seasons, keeping the score low and giving the Wallabies a chance to compete.

What do you look at to assess the success of your drafts?

The Legion of Doom are powering their way through the league again. Led by all star hitters throughout the lineup the legion are hitting the ball out of the park. However we need another starting pitcher pretty badly haha

First we thought it was a running start, then we checked to see what's going on, and realised the rotation was forgotten on 4-day to start the season. After correcting that, we thought the regression would start, but it seems the team is enjoying the chase. How long can the Wallabies ward of the twin challenge of the Bandits and the Whitecaps? 78 games remain.

Can you say epic collapse. The offense has dried up, Cougars are in the mix and 1st place has been surrendered to West Michigan.

Argh, this is maddening! Now West Michigan has coughed up the lead with an 8 game losing streak! We got swept by two teams we were a combined 10-2 against coming in. We just can't get it done at home. 31-30 at home now, 42-27 on the road.

The good thing for West Michigan is that the Wallabies are the exact opposite. Imperious at home, punching bags away from home.

The Miners are needing to win their final series of the season to reach the 55-win mark and avoid a draft penalty. We were well on track but trading two veteran pitchers for draft picks has come back to bite us harder than we expected. Two one-run defeats in the last series against the Indy Aces could haunt us if we can't produce in the three games against Rochester...

West Michigan is fighting to make the playoffs this year. Mid July things were great sitting 19 games over .500. Since then we have gone 30-32. Things were looking up a few games ago after sweeping the Wallabies and going 8-2 over that stretch. Now we just lost 3 of 4 to the Cougars and then the first game against Brisbane in the final series of the year and we sit in a three way tie for 2nd place.

The Miners reach the 55 with a game to spare, following a crazy 14-10 win, curbing a 9th inning rally by catching the opposition stealing home!

Should be a few promotions in the off-season which will bring some backbone to the pitching staff and make sure we can hit our target of 64 wins for the 3-year competitive requirement...

After going 66-94 last season I didn't expect the Indy Aces to make the playoffs this season. I'll take it and hope to give a good showing in the playoffs!
