Please make the forum easier to use.

I've recently been trying to create a table for my league to post trade blocks. I just can't get it to work. All my tables end up looking like crazy code. I'm sure there are people better at this than me and I'd be happy to take any coaching provided but I have to think there is an easier way to provide owners with the ability to post things like tables.

Unfortunately, due to legacy code used, we'd break the old tables by making it "easier".

We are looking into it right now to see if we can mitigate the problems when we upgrade, which will happen sometime in the near future.

We apologize for the inconvenience this is causing you. There are tutorials people have posted on how to do this.

Personally, I throw my data into excel, copy it out to notepad++, do a find and replace on \t (using extended) with a | wrap it in take tags.

ima send you a PM, I dont even use the table function the forum provides. I use ready made tables from the PCL website or that Vashon PM's me, and then I mix the tables together to get something that I like and looks good.

It's pretty simple once you get the hang of it.

To create a table like the following:

    A B C
    D E F
    G H I

You only need to do something like this.

    PHP Code:
    [TableC
    F
    I[/Table
If you're say doing a top 3 or 5 records in each stat post and you want side by side tables to save some space you can do something like

    Hitting Records
    Year Player Hits
    1981 John Smith 200
    1990 John Doe 199
    Year Player Walks
    1995 James Smith 155
    1983 James Doe 150
    Year Player Runs
    1981 John Smith 157
    1990 John Doe 145
    Year Player RBI
    1995 James Smith 185
    1983 James Doe 177
    Year Player 1B
    1981 John Smith 140
    1990 John Doe 131
    Year Player 2B
    1995 James Smith 51
    1983 James Doe 50
    Year Player 3B
    1981 John Smith 17
    1990 John Doe 15
    Year Player HR
    1995 James Smith 55
    1983 James Doe 47

This following example would do the above.

    PHP Code:
    [Table]{colsp=4}Hitting Records
    [TableYear Player Hits
    1981
    John Smith 200
    1990
John Doe 199[/Table] | [TableYear Player Walks
    1995
    James Smith 155
    1983
James Doe 150[/Table] | [TableYear Player Runs
    1981
    John Smith 157
    1990
John Doe 145[/Table] | [TableYear Player RBI
    1995
    James Smith 185
    1983
    James Doe 177[/Table]

    [
    TableYear Player 1B
    1981
    John Smith 140
    1990
    John Doe 131[/Table] | [TableYear Player 2B
    1995
    James Smith 51
    1983
    James Doe 50[/Table] | [TableYear Player 3B
    1981
    John Smith 17
    1990
John Doe 15[/Table] | [TableYear Player HR
    1995
    James Smith 55
    1983
    James Doe 47[/Table

I don't know if it applies to your troubles, but I'd just add to make sure you're using the "pipe" key as it can be easy to mistake for the lowercase "L". It's often coupled with the \ symbol. You're looking for | (pipe) instead of l (lowercase L).

More things you can do with tables here, that maybe others don't know. You can have it auto sort for you if you want to skip doing that yourself.

    1 John
    2 Paul
    3 Smith
    4 Peter
    5 Josh
    6 Will
    7 James

Was done this way. The 1 means sort by column 1, and "a" means ascending, while you'd do "d" if you wanted to do descending.

    PHP Code:
    [table="sort=1a"John
    Smith
    Paul
    Josh
    James
    Peter
    Will[/table
You can also have it auto number if you'd like

    1John
    2Smith
    3Paul
    4Josh
    5James
    6Peter
    7Will

    Doing this..

    PHP Code:
    [table="autonum=1"]John
    Smith
    Paul
    Josh
    James
    Peter
    Will
    [/table
Or if you'd like auto letters..

    aJohn
    bSmith
    cPaul
    dJosh
    eJames
    fPeter
    gWill

Using (You can use a capital A if you want them to do capital letters instead).

    PHP Code:
    [table="autonum=a"]John
    Smith
    Paul
    Josh
    James
    Peter
    Will
    [/table

Not that I post many tables, but I didn't know how to do the auto sort feature anywhere besides Excel.

    Thank you, Vashon!

Btw, just in case it wasn't clear, you can pick any column to sort and you can pick more then one column to sort by in case of tie breakers. So in the example below I have the "Name" column sorting ascending and for any matches of the same value for names it is sorting the # value descending. So you might find use for that sometimes.

    7 James
    4 James
    1 John
    5 Josh
    3 Smith
    2 Smith
    6 Will

    PHP Code:
    [table="sort=2a,1d"John
    Smith
    Smith
    Josh
    James
    James
    Will[/table

Re: Please make the forum easier to use.

I've found the easiest way to do it is to copy/paste the Excel cells into Word and then "convert to text" and "Separate Text with" | (the pipe, not the lower case L)

Then copy/paste that into the forums with table in [] in front of it and /table in [] at the end of it.

May not be the most elegant way of doing it, but its really simple.
